@ebeth it's great im watching my boyfriend play stardew and it's winter so it's the best soundtrack how's your evening

@friskywhiskers the stardew soundtrack is so soothing!

i spent most of the day feeling not great but then i remembered that painkillers exist and now i'm infinitely better. was watching dumb british panel shows, which is my usual go-to when i'm not feeling well, but now i'm reading this super in-depth twine essay about jon bois

@ebeth stardew is like a perfect game. i love twines! also British anything shows. where's you? im in Oakland CA

@friskywhiskers columbus ohio! i have a friend who lives in oakland but he's not on mastodon, otherwise i'd make you two be friends

Follow

@ebeth Ohio is a great place and you can drive on whatever side of the road you feel is appropriate and that's great IMO

@friskywhiskers lol too real

also turn signals always optional in ohio

luckily i don't have to drive much, it's a straight shot to work and back and i just refuse to hang out irl with anyone who doesn't live near me (honestly sometimes i refuse to hang out irl even with people that live near me)

@friskywhiskers a bit snowy, definitely cold. i grew up in michigan and spent this past NYE up there though and they definitely got a lot more snow

i'm of the strong opinion that once you get to a certain temperature, wind chill matters a lot more than the actual temperature. if it's 10 degrees out but there's no wind i'm absolutely fine, but if it's 15 and windy i'm bundling way up

i'm guessing oakland is a lot warmer. do you notice seasons much or is it just sort of warm vs less warm?

@ebeth my heart is all over Michigan i was just in Mason for New year's and it was the best.. Oakland is too nice IMHO when you're used to Michigan's weather it's like 55 and damp here all winter long it's just confusing when you're used to seasons

@friskywhiskers
wow yeah i would not want to live somewhere where 55 is the winter :-/ i love the cold, i would skip summer entirely if i could

michigan is so good!! sorry this is just a conversation about michigan now. i'm a yooper but spent more of my time in Grand Rapids. NYE for me was the extremely futile lions/packers game in detroit and then a very chill party with a handful of friends in ann arbor

are you from MI or do you just love it?

@ebeth went to school up at tech! Wish i could move back right now! Lived a while outside Grand rapids... North California is a lot like an LP fall or spring... It's ok

@friskywhiskers !!! i visited tech a couple times, never really had much intention of going there (i was solidly in the humanities) but had friends/family that were looking. the UP is honestly the best place on earth and i will fight anyone that says otherwise

i grew up in grand rapids and it was ok. i definitely miss the art and the music but i was a weird kid and also i have celiac disease so i can't drink beer so all the breweries are out lol

@ebeth im going to try to drag my boyfriend up to the UP this summer because I don't think you can actually explain what it is. Also there's a bridge involved. And a song. youtu.be/lMfxMZQpAJk

@friskywhiskers i'm hopefully dragging my SO camping up there this summer! the first/only time he'd ever been up there was with me during the winter which seemed right to me somehow but i figure i should be more lenient this time

it's defs in planning stages still but if you guys end up anywhere near pictured rocks in mid-july (i'm brave trying to get a campsite then, i know) hmu and we can show the trolls around

@friskywhiskers i should probably head to bed now since it's past 2am here but it was awesome meeting you and thanks for indulging my weird pride in geography :thinkergunsunglasses:

@ebeth Grand rapids, Kalamazoo, Grand Haven, South Haven, Holland, East Lansing, Ypsilanti, Ann arbor, Montague, Grand Marais, Marquette, Houghton, Hancock, Copper Harbor, etc

@ebeth also like Detroit but you know it's like everything is Detroit

@friskywhiskers detroit has grown on me a lot, my SO is from toledo and i've been going there a lot more than i ever did when i lived in michigan (even though my dad is from that area)

i was born in marquette and will always love it although i don't know if i'd ever want to live in the UP again. i try to visit as much as possible though, hoping to get some time off this summer to go to pictured rocks since it's been a bit (last time i was up there was 3 years ago, NYE in marquette)

i'd also love to get back to beaver island at some point, my family did vacations there for a while but it's been a looong time

@ebeth oh oh oh pictured rocks oh Marquette we used to go there for fun and chain restaurants ah Michigan kills

More manatees died last year in Florida than ever before recorded, but scientists are still unsure what's killing them. But not everyone is happy with the seemingly good news. The Center for Biological Diversity noted 2016 was the deadliest year to date for manatees. "Manatees are still in danger. With ongoing threats posed by boat strikes and habitat loss, we don't support reducing protections," said Social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook were abuzz with warnings to avoid the area and numerous photos taken from the area.
